PLEASE NOTE: WE ARE NOT TAKING ANY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR HONORARY AWARDS AT THIS TIME.

using your honorary doctoral title

As soon as you receive your honorary degree, you may rightfully refer to yourself as an honorary doctor and enjoy the benefits that these titles entail.  When using or displaying your title, these three aspects should always be clear:

Examples of how your name can be written to include your honorary title:

Alan Jones, Dr. Honoris Causa (Religion, EMET, USA)

Doctor H.C. of Sacred Music, Nadine Dennis (EMET, USA)

Chizuma Ogbon, Honorary Doctor of Humane letters (EMET, USA)

A)

The recipient of an honorary degree may add the title post-nominally. In some countries, like the United States, a person who holds an honorary doctorate can use the title "Doctor" before their name, abbreviated "Dr.", in correspondence with the issuing institute.  In other countries, you must always establish the honorary nature of your degree by adding "honorary", "honoris causa" or "h.c." in parenthesis after the degree title. Honorary titles may be used outside of the academic field as long as it is made clear that they are not professional designations.  Moreover, an honorary title should never be deceptively similar to a professional title in the judgment of an average observer, as this can constitute false designation.

When using an honorary degree to apply for a job or a position that requires an earned degree, the individual as a matter of good ethical conduct must disclose the fact that the degree is honorary. If you abide by these guidelines, you may legally refer to yourself as an honorary doctor and take advantage of all the benefits.
